Three wickets in three consecutive balls should be a rare feat, more so in a batsmen-dominated league like IPL. However, it’s not that rare, as 16 bowlers have achieved this feat in the 13 IPL editions. The inaugural edition saw three hat-tricks with Lakshmipathy Balaji being the first hat-trick hero of IPL. Surprisingly, some part-timers also managed to earn their place among hat-trick takers.

1. Amit Mishra:
An outstanding performer in IPL, the veteran leg spinner has a record for the second-highest total wickets (160) and most hat-tricks (03) in the tournament. His first hat trick came in 2008 against Deccan Chargers while representing Delhi Daredevils. He repeated the feat in 2011 against Kings XI Punjab again for Delhi Daredevils. Come 2013, Mishra yet again claimed three wickets in three balls on the trot against Pune Warriors when playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
2. Yuvraj Singh:
The man with the golden arm, Yuvraj did it twice, in the same IPL season. The first came against Royal Challengers Bangalore when he dismissed Uthappa, Kallis, and Mark Boucher in three consecutive deliveries spreading across two overs. The second time, the then Kings XI Punjab’s skipper repeated the performance against the now-defunct, Deccan Chargers. Yuvraj was in red-hot form with the bat also, finishing the season as the highest run-getter for KXIP with 340 runs.
3. Lakshmipathy Balaji:
The former India pacer, L Balaji was the first-ever hat-trick hero of IPL. In 2008, against KXIP at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Balaji bowled a superb spell to get rid of Irfan, Piyush Chawla and Yuvraj Singh in 3 balls. His bowling figures were impressive, with 24 runs for 05 wickets.
4. Rohit Sharma:
Rohit’s heroic innings with the bat are the stuff of legends. But in 2009, he did the unthinkable. He dismissed Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and JP Duminy in successive balls to complete a hat-trick. He was playing for Deccan Chargers against the team he captains currently, Mumbai Indians. Note that, Deccan Chargers went on to win their maiden IPL title in that season.
5. Andrew Tye:
The Aussie paceman made history in 2017, becoming the first bowler in IPL history to take a hat-trick on debut. He was representing Gujarat Lions against Rising Pune Super Giants.
